The operation took a total of 27 hours to remove the remains of her parasitic twin. The parasitic twin used her body for nutrition and respiration although the young child was unable to move the additional limbs.  She has been featured on shows on television such as National Geographic and will require additional surgeries to correct her spine and feet which are pointed inward.

Unfortunately, Mrs Brown contracted septicaemia, and her metal shoulder had to be removed. The infection spread down the left arm, so the upper bone also had to be taken out and instead filled with a special type of padding. To make matters worse, the infection then spread to her right shoulder, and a section of damaged bone had to be removed too.  Despite being pumped with antibiotics she became critically ill and doctors didn’t expect her to survive. She was read the Last Rites in hospital but miraculously pulled through and made a full recovery.

As a legacy of her problems she can no longer raise her arms above shoulder height. ‘It’s a pain wearing bras and strappy tops. They just slip down  because my shoulders cannot keep them up.’

April 21, 2008

Alex Lenkei chose to use the mind instead of drugs as anesthetic. Using self hypnosis Alex claims he was able to block out all of the pain from the surgery while being fully aware. The surgeon David Llewelyn-Clark had no qualms over the unusual request.

However, before you try this on yourself from some internet self help book, Lenkei has been a registered hypnotist since age 16. Throughout the surgery Lenkei said he felt deeply relaxed and there was a anasthesiologist on hand the entire time in case Lenkei’s plan did not go as well as he intended.

Wow. now only if UFC fighters could do this.
